Stigmatochromis woodi is a long-bodied predator haplochromine cichlid native to Lake Malawi. These juveniles are bred locally in Indiana by an expert cichlid breeder, ensuring strong genetics, healthy growth, and a smooth acclimation to home aquariums.

Though juveniles currently show minimal coloration, adult males become absolutely stunning—displaying shimmering electric blues with bold vertical bars and elegant trailing fins. Photos of the adult breeding pair are included on this listing so you can see exactly what to expect as these fish mature.

What We Love About This Fish:

• Rare and impressive Lake Malawi predator hap
• Locally bred in Indiana by a trusted cichlid specialist
• Grows into a bold centerpiece fish with vivid color and movement
• Known for its graceful swimming style and striking appearance

Natural Habitat:

This species typically inhabits open water near rocky shorelines in Lake Malawi, where it preys on smaller fish. It prefers well-oxygenated, alkaline water with plenty of space for cruising and ambush-style hunting.

Aquascaping:

Plants: Not recommended—likely to be ignored or disturbed
Hardscape: Large rocks, caves, and open swimming space are essential
Botanicals: Rarely used for Malawi setups, but driftwood or inert pods may provide visual interest without altering water chemistry

Diet and Feeding:

Stigmatochromis woodi thrives on a protein-rich diet. Feed a rotation of frozen foods like krill, mysis shrimp, and silversides, along with high-quality carnivore pellets. We highly recommend Ultra Fresh Royal Cichlid Premium Pellet – Shrimp Delight as a staple, packed with shrimp protein and attractants to support healthy appetite and vibrant coloration.

Tank Mates and Compatibility:

Best kept with other large, semi-aggressive haps or peacocks. Avoid small, slow-moving, or delicate species. This fish can be territorial, especially as a mature male, so provide ample space and structure to reduce conflict.

Shrimp Safe:

❌ No – This species is a predator and will eat shrimp or small tankmates.

Breeding:

A maternal mouthbrooder. Males establish a territory and court females, who then carry fertilized eggs in their mouths until the fry are free-swimming. The juveniles we offer are the offspring of the adult pair featured in the listing photos.

Recommended Tank Parameters:

Temperature: 76° - 82° F (24° - 28° C)
pH: 7.8 – 8.6
