Ā

The Bladder Snail (Physella acuta)Ā is an excellent scavenger and substrate sifter that is also a voracious algae eater that does not eat or bother ornamental plants. That being said, they will feed on dead or decaying plant matter. This hardy snail is often introduced to the aquarium by hitchhiking on plants.Ā This snail is viewed by many as a pest, but can be a quite beneficial addition to your aquariums clean up crew. It is important not to overfeed when keeping this snail as they will quickly repopulate if there is an excess of food.

Ā

Feeding and care is very easy for the hardy Bladder Snail. It requires the same maintenance and conditions as most tropical aquarium snails and should never be exposed to copper. It will eat nearly any high-quality dry and frozen foods, but it will also feed heavily on algae, biofilm, and decaying plant matter in the aquarium. This freshwater riverine species will thrive in a variety of water parameters, but its shell will reportedly gray and lose color in excessively acidic pH levels.

Many hobbyists also use Bladder Snails as a live food source for Pufferfish, Loaches, and a number of other species. They are an excellent food source as they have softer shells than most snail species and breed rapidly.

Please Note: This species is livebearing and is extraordinarily prolific. With proper care, its population can be managed and it is an extremely useful scavenger. However, it can explode in population and become somewhat of a "nuisance" when unmanaged, especially in aquariums where overfeeding occurs regularly.
